IN FOCUS - Friday Club (Senior Youth Group) |
|
Friday club happens at 7:30pm every Friday and is open to everyone who attends
our Sunday School and is aged 11 and upwards. (If you'd like to come why not
pop in and see us?) Here's a few words to let you know what we get up to...
In summer we try to go out on a trip every other week. These outings include
Bowling, Swimming, Outdoor games and Ice Skating. In winter we go out approximately
one week in four. When we're back at the Hall we play pool, table tennis and other
games, as well as taking part in other activities that are organised by members of
the Church. We try to keep the programme as varied as possible with Art, Craft,
Quizzes, Cooking and more Games. We think that it is important to share what God
says in the Bible with others, so for a few minutes during the evening we put down
our bats and cues, and one of the leaders shares a short thought with the rest of us.
We don't demand that everyone who comes to club believes everything that we say, but
Friday club is a church Youth Club and we expect the members and leaders to respect
each other and their beliefs.
I love helping out at Club even though it is really humiliating to get thrashed at
table tennis by an eleven year old. Probably the best advert for the club is that
most of the leaders were members themselves in their younger days and enjoyed it
so much that they never stopped coming.

THOUGHT - "An Olympic Year" |
|
Wow!, Our millennium year is over and what a year? All manner of events took place
but surely the event of the year must be the Sydney Olympic Games.
Most nations and most sports were represented and probably most would agree that
the spirit of the Games was abundantly evident. Yes it was important for individuals
and teams to win the coveted gold medals, but just to take part, to be there must
have been tremendously exciting and memorable for everyone.
It is ironic though that it takes a huge event like the Olympic Games to highlight
the fundamental principles God has given to mankind. Olympic rules are rooted and
founded on Christian principles of fairness, consideration, patience, peace, and
kindness all bound up in love for one another.
To win a medal does of course demand hard work, dedication and commitment.
A thorough knowledge of the rules is absolutely essential. So, just as the
sportsman or athlete has to be totally familiar with the rules, the Christian
must also find out for him / herself about God's rules for life.
A dedicated and committed reading of the gospel will give us ALL of the rules
of life we need to put into practice, so that we can achieve a prize far far greater
than all the gold medals awarded ever. The apostle Paul talks about this prize in
his first letter to the Corinthian Church (1 Corinthians 9:24,25)
"Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize?
Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into
strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get
a crown that will last forever...".
The crown is eternal life and the challenge is there for everyone. Are we going to
enter the race of life with the dedication and commitment that is due to our
Heavenly Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, or will we take the easy option to
simply be a spectator? If we don't 'take up the baton' we deny ourselves the
prospect of a wonderfully fulfilled life, a life transformed by knowing Jesus
now and having the prospect of God granting us the ULTIMATE prize of eternal
life in his Kingdom on earth when Jesus returns.
